Art opening tonight at the UW Math and Science Teaching Center

I'm participating in an art show that opens tonight (November 5) at the Math and Science Teaching Center on the University of Wyoming campus.  The opening is from 6:30-8:30, so if you're in town, stop by and have a look.  There will be lots of art there from local artists. The show is on the 4th floor of Wyoming Hall.

Honey Bee Gallery show opening and other news!

I have a show opening at the Honey Bee Gallery in Laramie on Friday at 6 p.m..  If you're in town, stop by and enjoy the photographs of abandoned and neglected sites around Laramie.  And there's free wine!  The Honeybee is downtown across the street from Coal Creek Coffee.  The show will hang for about a month, so if you can't make it on Friday, stop in sometime.

In other news, my photograph of the Skull Rim (below) won first place for photography at the Red Desert Art Show in Rock Springs, sponsored by the Wyoming Wilderness Coalition.  The show is still hanging at the Community Fine Arts Center on C Street in Rock Springs.  Thanks to Wyoming photographer, Jeff Vanuga, for judging the show!

Touchstone Laramie 2012

This weekend is Touchstone Laramie--the big art show that we put on every two years.  I've been so busy between teaching and preparing for the show and for my simultaneous show in Boulder, that the blog has fallen by the wayside.  That's been the story all fall, but soon the semester will end and I'll have to think of new excuses--like skiing--to stay away from the cybersphere.  Actually, I'm looking forward to having a little time in my life again for things like photography and laziness.

The Touchstone show, in case you've never been, is at the Fairfield Inn in Laramie.  We rent an entire floor of the hotel, and each artist sets up a room as a gallery.  There are about 35 artists participating, and it's always a fun event--social with good art.  Stop by this weekend (Nov. 17-18) if you're in town!

I'm off to Boulder this afternoon to hang a show of my Uganda photos at the Dairy Center for the Arts.  The show opens this Friday, October 26, with artist talks from 4-5 and a reception from 5-7.  If you're in area, stop by and say hi.  Of course our first significant winter weather of the season is also scheduled for Friday, so If I get snowed into Laramie, I'll let you know--but even if I do, stop by and have a look.  Bay Roberts will be there representing One School at a Time, the NGO whose projects are the subject of my images.

Shows and Events

First, sorry about the long blog hiatus.  Classes began at UW (no, not Washington, not Wisconsin: Wyoming!) two weeks ago and I'm inundated with teaching this semester.  I'm starting to settle into a routine (work, sleep, repeat) and will try to be more regular with blog posts.

The Math and Science Teaching Center at UW here in Laramie is having an opening this Wednesday (September 12, 6:30 p.m.) for local artists whose work was chosen to decorate their space on 3rd floor of Wyo Hall, on campus.  The three images in this blog post will all be in the show as 12" x 18" framed prints.  I plan to be there, and if you're looking for something to do midweek, stop by.  

In other news, I'm gearing up for two other shows this fall.  The biennial Laramie Artists Project show will be held November 17-18 at the Fairfield Inn in Laramie.  If you aren't familiar with it, we rent a floor of the hotel and each of more than 30 local artists transform a room into a gallery.  It's always a fun event with some great artwork for sale.  I'll mostly focus on Wyoming work this year.

I also have a show of my Uganda work at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder.  The opening is on November 2 and the show will hang until December 7. 

I've also donated an image to BCA (the Biodiversity Conservation Alliance), an incredibly effective conservation group based here in Laramie, for silent auction at their fund-raising Badger Ball on the evening of September 15 at the Alice Hardy Stevens Center in Laramie.  Attend if you can for an evening of music (J. Shogren and Jeff Duloz), drinks, food, and art.

How I'm going to get ready for these shows and keep up with classes is one of the mysteries of the universe, but it's one that I'll have to solve pretty soon.

Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition

All three of the images that I submitted for Wyoming Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition were accepted by the jury.  I'm excited to be part of this show for the 2nd year.  The reception this year is June 30 in Cheyenne.  I'll provide more information later in June.  These images will be displayed as 12" x 18" framed prints and are for sale.  Part of the proceeds support the arts in Wyoming.  All of these images have appeared in this blog before.

Thanks to everyone that came to my opening at Breadworks in Boulder.  It was great to see friends there and surprising to meet a bunch of people who I didn't know.  And thanks to Breadworks for serving a great meal--I ate way more gourmet pizza than I should have.  

I've been incredibly busy between teaching my regular classes and getting ready for the Breadworks show, and  haven't been posting here as much as I'd like.  I hope to get back into the routine in the next week, so watch for a new post inspired by a TED Talk I recently listened to on my IPOD while on the stationary bike trying to compensated for...well...pizza.

I sold a print at the opening of the image above.  It's always been a favorite of mine from Kashgar, which for me was one of the most interesting places that I visited while living in China.  It's changed a lot just since I was there, no thanks to the Chinese government, which seeks to dilute the troublesome Uighur population.  I feel lucky to have been there when I was, before large sections of the old city were bulldozed.  You can see more Kashgar photos on my flickr site.

I'm heading to Boulder this afternoon, despite the "damaging winds" that are gusting there this morning to 75 mph according to the Weather Underground.  I'm hanging my photos at Breadworks tonight in anticipation of the opening tomorrow night, Friday, January 20, from 6-9 p.m., at Breadworks in Boulder.  I hope to see some of my Boulder friends there, but have been warning then that Breadworks is charging $10 to get in.  My feelings won't be hurt if you don't want to pay to go to Breadworks!  You can look at the photos for free some other time.  But...if you do make it, thanks!  I'm looking forward to visiting.
